Translating the Lord’s Prayer directly from the Greek

Normally this is what we think of when we read or say the Lords Prayer.
NIV: Matt 6: 9Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
But did you ever wonder what the original words were? Well here they are:
Matthew 6:9
·
Πάτερ (Father [ancestor, elder, senior] - masculine)
ἡμῶν (our, of us) ὁ (which
[is]) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heaven, heavens)
·
ἁγιασθήτω (Holy, Hallowed) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name [reputation, character,
His presence]) σου (your, of you)
Matthew
6:10
·
ἐλθέτω (come, arrive) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom,
[sovereignty, royal power])
·
σου (your, of you) γενηθήτω (be done, brought forth, happen)
τὸ (the)
θέλημά (will, best-offer, desire )
·
σου (Your), ὡς (as)
ἐν (In) οὐρανῷ (heaven)
καὶ ([so] also, even) ἐπὶ (on, upon) τῆς (the) γῆς
(earth, land, region, country, inhabitants of a region)
Matthew 6:11
·
τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread, food, loaf of bread) ἡμῶν (our, of
us) τὸν (the) ἐπιούσιον (necessary/sufficient) δὸς (for,
grant, give) ἡμῖν (our) σήμερον (now/today)
Matthew 6:12
·
Καὶ (and, even, also) ἄφες (forgive, send away, leave alone, permit to depart) ἡμῖν
(us, to us) τὰ (the)
ὀφειλήματα (depts., offense, sin) ἡμῶν (of us, ours)
·
ὡς (as) καὶ (and,
also) ἡμεῖς (our) ἀφίεμεν (we send away) τοῖς (the)
ὀφειλέταις (debts) ἡμῶν (our)
Matthew 6:13
·
καὶ (and, also) μὴ (not, don't) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead, you
lead into, bring in) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (in, into) πειρασμόν (temptation,
an experiment, a trial)
·
ἀλλὰ (but, however) ῥῦσαι (rescue, deliver) ἡμᾶς (us)
ἀπὸ (from, away from) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil, evil one, evil
person)
Now we can examine the phrasing which can help us understand exactly what Jesus said.
As an example:
Father of us who is in Heaven. Your reputation and character are holy.
Let your royal power and sovereignty be brought fourth to our country on earth, just as it is in heaven.
Give us the food necessary for today.
And forgive our offenses as we forgive those who have offended us.
Do not lead us into a trial, but rescue us from the evil one.
